Safety Within Our Building
All visitors and volunteers to Jennie Elliott School are asked to enter the front doors by buzzing the front office, and signing in at the office upon entering. Please do not come in your child’s entry door as we need to account for all of the visitors in our building. Volunteers are asked to sign in at the office and to pick up a Volunteer name tag to be worn while in the school. Please leave your name tag at the school for future use.
Parking
We kindly ask all parents and guardians to exercise caution when approaching the school in vehicles. Please observe speed limits, parking rules, bus zones, crosswalks, and always respect our staff and students. Your cooperation is vital in creating a secure environment for our students.
Please remember that the staff parking lot is strictly off-limits for student drop-off or pick-up, including before and after school care. Your adherence to all signage and regulations helps maintain a safe and orderly environment around the school.
We encourage families to use the newly painted drop zone on 66th St as we try to reduce congestion and unsafe crossings on 30th St and Lindsay Drive. The church has also kindly made their parking lot available for 15-minute parking, morning and after school .
Designated Doors
Each grade uses a designated door for drop off and pick up.
Morning Drop-off
During soft entry that begins at 8:31am, families can either walk their child to their designated door, or usher them to the fenced field where a supervisor will watch over students as they enter the building. Instruction begins at 8:41am. All students must enter through the front door after 8:41am and be checked in at the office.
End of Day
Families are asked to meet your child at a designated meeting spot and not wait outside their homeroom as the hallways are very congested with children at the end of the day. We encourage all of our children to be independent in their routines and learn to meet parents in these locations.
At dismissal time, teachers will bring their classes to the designated door. Teachers will dismiss students to caregivers for students in grades K-2. For students in grades 3-6, if parents want their students dismissed to a caregiver, please email the teacher with this request. If you are more than 5 minutes late, you will need to pick up your child from the main office.
After school all outside doors will remain locked. If students are waiting for a ride and a parent is delayed, they are advised to report to the main office for assistance. If you are picking your child up from Before & After School Care, please use the Before & After School Care buzzer located by the front door so the door can be opened for you.
Supervision
Morning
For safety reasons, please ensure your child does not arrive at school prior to 8:31am. At this time, students are able to enter the school and make their way to their classroom as part of our soft entry procedure. If you require childcare prior to 8:31am, please call the privately run Before and After School program at 403-383-7999.
To ensure student safety into the building, we will have staff members supervising the two south entrances along the fence onto the school field, during soft entry from 8:31-8:41am. We will also have supervisors stationed at the entry doors to help usher students safely in to the school.
Lunch Time
The lunchroom staff provides supervision continuously over the lunch hour for those students in our lunchroom program.
After-School
There is no supervision available on the schoolyard after school when students are dismissed. We ask that students go home immediately upon dismissal and return to the schoolyard only with parental supervision and/or permission. The school is not responsible for the actions of children in the playground after dismissal time.
If you will be picking your child up from school, please contact the office so that we can relay this message on to your child. Students are to report to the office to wait for their parent/guardian and the parent/guardian will sign them out. We ask that you also explain this procedure to your child.
Demographic Report
At the beginning of the school year, parents will be asked to complete a Demographic Report for each child they have attending Jennie Elliott School. This information is critical in dealing with emergencies or illnesses. If there are any changes in telephone numbers, addresses, emergency contacts, etc. through the year, please forward this information to the school office immediately.
If there are child custody issues or restrictions in place, please ensure that the office is made aware of them. We ask that supporting documentation be presented to the office for verification. This information is treated in a very confidential and professional manner.
Lockdowns
All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.
Evacuation Procedures
In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
Video Surveillance Technology
The Calgary Board of Education may install and use video surveillance technology at select schools to support maintaining a safe and secure environment and to help control vandalism and criminal activity on school property.
Personal information gathered by video surveillance is collected under the authority of the Education Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) section 33(b). The users of this information are the principal or designate and law enforcement personnel in the case of reported incidents that would require an investigation. Only authorized persons will review video surveillance information.
This technology is considered a complement to, and not a replacement for, CBE's strategies in supporting a welcoming, caring, safe, and respectful learning and work environment for students and staff.
Approval, installation and use of video surveillance technology will comply with Administrative Regulation 1066.
For questions or concerns, please contact the school principal.
