Hello Jennie Elliott families,
Our School Council spoiled us today with a beautiful staff appreciation luncheon! We are so grateful for the generous community that we get the privilege to work with every day. You show your support in so many ways, and we feel truly fortunate to collaborate with you to ensure our students grow and thrive at Jennie Elliott. Thank you to the organizers for a beautiful and delicious lunch!
National Indigenous People’s Day
June 21 is recognized as National Indigenous People’s Day in Canada. The CBE’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and Indigenous Education is year-round. In line with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, at Jennie Elliott our commitment to actioning Education for ReconciliACTION this year was:
Our classes will be sharing with each other a collection of the various ways we have learned from the traditional Treaty 7 land on which Jennie Elliott sits, as well as the many opportunities we have shared Indigenous ways of being, belonging, doing and knowing that have enriched our curriculum teachings over the year.
Last week, we invited our CBE Indigenous Learning team member, Shane Cunningham, to share Buffalo Teachings with the students. They learned that the buffalo represents many important values that we can be inspired by including strength, resilience, harmony, protection, humility and adaptability.
Next week, on June 21, we are honoured to welcome Elder Sheldon First-Rider to share Tipi Teachings with our grade 4, 5 and 6 students, as well as experience the assembling of a full tipi on Jennie Elliott’s field. Parents are welcome to join their child’s grade team time to learn from Elder First-Rider's teachings as well. We will send the schedule of times once it is finalized next week. In the fall next year, we are planning for our current grades K-3 students to also experience the Tipi Teachings.
PlayDay – June 26
We are excited to have our annual Playday on June 26! This year's theme is "ColourOlympics," and we have an array of fun and engaging events planned for the day. To ensure the event is successful, we are asking for your support through volunteering. Playday is one of the highlights of the school year, offering students a chance to enjoy various outdoor activities while fostering teamwork and school spirit. We have multiple events throughout the day that require volunteer assistance, both in the morning and afternoon.
Volunteer Opportunities
Your involvement will be crucial in making this day enjoyable and memorable for all our students. Whether you can spare a few hours in the morning, the afternoon, or the entire day, we welcome and appreciate your help. Please sign up and make sure your police clearance is up to date. Thank you in advance for your time and support.
Lunch
A fun lunch will be provided through Healthy Hunger if you register at HealthyHunger. We look forward to celebrating a fun-filled ColourOlympics Playday with you and the students!
