Hello Jennie Elliott families,

The weather couldn’t have cooperated more to give us the best week ever for Take Me Outside Week! Here’s how some of our classes celebrated learning in the great outdoors:

~“We learned some traditional Indigenous games like Corralling Buffalo, a Cree game that emphasizes teamwork in order to catch bison, and Run and Scream, a Blackfoot game that  focuses on building endurance and lung capacity. (Run and Scream was definitely a classroom favourite!)”

~“We made science posters, and wrote poetry using the sights and sounds of nature to inspire us!”

~“We did a sit spot to reflect on the sights and sounds around us, practiced counting collections with outdoor loose parts, and created our own Leaf Man stories using the story of Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert as our provocation.”

~“We spent the morning at North Glenmore Park, noticing seasonal changes and asking questions about the changes in their sit spot area. They also made art with nature and played camouflage.”

Remembrance Day Ceremony & Slideshow Reminder

We will be paying tribute to our Veterans at an assembly in our school gymnasium on November 7th at 10:30 am.  Parents are welcome to attend and doors will open at 10:15 am.  Please understand that capacity is extremely limited and there may be standing room only. Parents and other family members attending the assembly may find a place to stand near the back, or along the side walls of the gym. We appreciate your patience and flexibility as you share in this special event with our students.

As in years past, our school is putting together a slideshow to honor service members of students' families. This slideshow will be shown during our Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 7.  If you have a photo you would like included, of a grand-parent, great-grandparent, parent, aunt, uncle, etc. who served (or is serving) in any of the Canadian military branches, please send it a to jldanchuk@cbe.ab.ca no later than Friday November 1st. Please also include the veteran's name (and regiment if known), student's name and relation (i.e. Jennie's great - grandfather).

Last Day for Jacket Racket Collection- October 31

Our collection boxes have already been gathered once, as they were overflowing with donations!  Thank you for your generosity JES families!

October 31 is the last day for Jacket Racket donation collection.  Donation boxes are located in our front foyer.  Please ensure that gently used clothing is clean and coat pockets are emptied prior to bringing in items.

Highlights from the Music Program & Ms. Ling

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication in music.”

~ Carl Orff

What is seemingly simple is sometimes very sophisticated.  This captures well what the Grade 1 and Grade 2 students are doing in music.  After exploring the different vocal qualities (speaking voice, stage voice, whispering voice and singing voice), they explore the potentials of the “non-pitched instruments”.  Students are applying what they know about the wood, metal, shake-and-scrape and membrane families to create a soundscape inspired by stories.  They connect sounds to imagery and use creative (sometimes non-traditional) ways to play the instruments in order to create sound effects to enhance the story.

Division II choir…save the date!

The Division II choir will be singing at the Remembrance Day assembly on November 7th at 10:30am. Doors will open to guests at 10:15 am.

Halloween

Halloween has already made an appearance on many lawns and houses, and our students are filled with excitement as the day approaches! As always, Halloween is planned to be inclusive and respectful of all students, so while students are invited to dress in costumes for the day, it is by no means expected. There are also many non-expensive ways that students can dress-up using their everyday clothes including dressing as their favourite colour, dressing inside out, dressing as twins with a friend or dressing up for the opposite season, to name a few. It is an instructional day, so students are welcome to come to school dressed up in costumes as long as:

  • the student is able to engage in all learning activities in the costume (including Phys. Ed.)
  • the costume is appropriate for all ages and school (no violence/gore)
  • weapons and/or masks remain at home (including light sabers or other plastic weapon-like accessories)

Thank you for helping us to plan a fun and safe experience for our students on Halloween!

Lost and Found

We have many items that are lost, and need to find their home again! Please take the opportunity to come by the school to search for any articles of clothing you know (or suspect) your child is missing. We will also have the lost and found out and available during School Conferences at the end of November.
