Hello Jennie Elliott Families,
Warm New Year greetings to all of our Jennie Elliott families as we welcome 2026! The start of a new year is always a meaningful moment in the school calendar—a time to reflect, reset, and set fresh goals as we move into the second half of the school year.
As we begin this next chapter together, we wish all of our families a happy, healthy, and successful 2026.
Ongoing Reporting of Student Progress | MyCBE/PowerSchool
Regular communication between home and school plays an important role in helping families understand their child’s learning and progress. Our school currently shares this information through report cards, School Conferences, and ongoing conversations between families and teachers.
In addition, we use PowerSchool as another tool for sharing assessment information with families. Through the MyCBE/PowerSchool portal, families have ongoing access to summative assessment information, allowing them to stay informed about their child’s progress and achievement throughout the term.
If you have further questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
2025-26 New Registrations!
New registrations for grade K-6 for the 2026-27 school year will begin on Monday, January 12, 2026. If you have a child ready to begin Kindergarten next year, or you know of someone who has a child ready to attend Jennie Elliott Kindergarten next year, please refer to the CBE Kindergarten Information webpage for further information. We will be holding our New Registration Information Session on February 5, 2026 at 6:00pm for parents/guardians to hear information about the Jennie Elliott Kindergarten and grades 1-6 programming and ask any questions you may have of the Administration and teaching teams.
Please refer to the CBE’s Registration webpage for further information.
K-3 Provincial Assessments
Universal screeners are assessments that measure a learner’s proficiency in different skills. In the Calgary Board of Education, teachers administer provincially mandated literacy and numeracy screening assessments in kindergarten to grade 3. Kindergarten students will experience their first round with these screeners in January, while grades 1-3 will experience their second round. Please read more about this from our CBE brochure, Understanding Universal Screeners.
Highlights from the Music Program & Ms. Ling
Grade 1 students have been exploring high and low sounds as well as long and short sounds. They are beginning to connect these sounds to written symbols. They have also been experimenting with different non-pitched instruments. By following stories told by music and by these rhythm instruments, students begin to understand how music can express feelings.
Grade 2 students are exploring barred instruments including the xylophones, metallophones and glockenspiels as these instruments will lay the foundation for ensemble playing. As they delve deeper into music literacy, Grade 2 students continue to build on what they learned from Grade 1 and read simple printed symbols.
Join Us for “Curriculum 101” Parent Information Night
As shared in September during Meet the Teacher, Jennie Elliott School has planned to host parent information nights related to a variety of learning topics. We are happy to confirm that our rescheduled events after the strike will resume this January. The next of the series, entitled “Curriculum 101”, will be of great interest to parents who are curious about what their children are learning in school and the recent shift to the new curriculum. In recognition of Family Literacy Day, the session will take place on January 27th from 5:00–6:00 PM in the school Learning Commons.
Attendees will gain insights into learning objectives of the Alberta Kindergarten to Grade 6 curriculum, key subject areas, and the educational goals guiding your child’s academic growth . You will also have the opportunity to explore curriculum specific to your child’s current grade, ask questions, and deepen your understanding of how to support their learning journey at home and at school.
Please RSVP by January 23, 2026 using this form.
