Hello Jennie Elliott families,
In response to our Truth and Reconciliation Call to Action this year, all grades K-6 engaged in sharing circles at the beginning and end of the day on Thursday to further understand the purpose of these gatherings from a “two-eyed seeing” perspective – using the strength of Indigenous knowledge in combination with the strength of Western knowledge to use both “eyes” in a way that benefits all. Sharing circles, or talking circles as they are also commonly referred to, are a way of facilitating discussions in the spirit of reciprocity. Over the year, our hope is to help students understand the concept of reciprocity and that we are equally responsible for how we contribute towards strengthening others’ sense of belonging at Jennie Elliott, as much as others are responsible for helping us to feel safe and cared for.
By the end of the day, the sun had come out and our field was a powerful reflection of the spirit of communication and connection happening at Jennie Elliott.
Saying Farewell to Ms Moses!
We have had the pleasure of welcoming Ms. Beth Moses to Jennie Elliott as our Administrative Secretary for the past year while Ms. Nikki Jung was on maternity leave. Ms. Jung will be returning on October 7, so our last day with Ms. Moses will be October 4. Next week, Ms. Moses will be spending most of the week transitioning to her new school, RT Alderman, but we are glad we will be able to say our good-byes to her on October 4 as her last day at Jennie Elliott. We are so grateful to Ms. Moses for all of her care and support stepping into a very busy and essential role at our school. We will miss her and wish her all the best at her new school!
Highlights from the Music Program & Ms. Ling
Exploring music from different cultures continues to be the focus for the next few weeks. After their first experience of ensemble playing on Orff instruments, Grade 5 and 6 students continue to develop their skills on performing multi-voiced textures, this time through African drumming. They learned the “basic alphabet” of drumming, i.e. the bass tone and the treble tone, and combined them to make interesting rhythmic patterns. Through this experience, students learned to listen to how their part interacts with another part.
Division II students (Grades 4-6) are invited to come to the Division II Choir “Check-it-Out” session on Tuesday, October 1. This will give students the opportunity to see what we do in choir, e.g. the repertoire, the time commitment and the behaviour expectation. After this initial session, students who are interested in joining the choir will sign a form. As the choir will be performing sometime during the first term, choir members are expected to attend all practices until the end of January. The “Check-it-Out” session starts promptly at 12:40 PM. See you there!

School Start Time
A reminder that our inside warning bell rings at 8:54 AM to remind teachers to be in their classrooms to welcome students for soft entry. The doors open to students at 8:55 AM and close when the outside bell rings at 9:05 to signal that students should already be in their classrooms to begin instruction. After 9:05 AM, we welcome students in to school through the front doors only so our door supervisors can get to classes where they are needed to support students.
Cavalry Soccer Game
We are fortunate that one of our parents works with the Cavalry team and will be able to host our JES families that take advantage of this fabulous offer to attend the “Fan Appreciation Match”. Of special note, the three schools with the most tickets to the match will receive a school visit by a Cavalry FC player! Purchase tickets!
