Hello Jennie Elliott Families,
We hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break, even if Calgary’s spring weather continues to fool us all! It looks like we may need to wait a little longer for warmer temperatures and sunshine, but please continue to ensure students come to school prepared for the weather, including outdoor footwear that can get wet in slush or puddles.
A reminder that there is no school tomorrow on Friday, April 3 for Good Friday. Classes will resume on Monday, April 6.
Attendance and Late Arrivals
Did you know there are only 57 school days remaining in the year? Every day at school counts, and regular attendance helps build strong learning habits. Under the Alberta Education Act, missing 10% of school, calculated at any time of the year, is considered chronic absenteeism. If your child will be away for an extended period over the next three months, please notify the school office.
Late arrivals can also significantly impact learning. Frequent lateness disrupts both the student and the class. Arriving with their peers helps provide the structure and routine students need for successful learning. If your child arrives late, parents must sign them in at the school office. Student safety is a shared responsibility, and we appreciate families who notify the school of absences or late arrivals.
Off-site Field Trips, Walking Excursions and Onsite Events
The next three months will include many off-site field trips and onsite events across grade levels. Fees will continue to be posted and communication sent to families about upcoming deadlines. Any outstanding school supply fees are also posted in PowerSchool. We encourage families to log in and complete payments as soon as possible.
Screenagers Movies: Last chance to view
Remember to mark your calendar for April 16! We’re hosting one final Screenagers screening before our license expires in May. We will be showing both films back-to-back, and we'll have popcorn!
6:00–7:00 PM – Screenagers: Elementary School Age Edition
7:00–8:00 PM – Screenagers: The Next Chapter
Don’t miss this last chance to see these impactful films about kids, teens, and navigating screen time.
SDP Highlights
We are excited to highlight the intentional fluency work occurring in our grade groups to help families understand the connection between our school development focus and student skill development. This week we are highlighting our Grade 4 students!
In Grade 4, students are continuing to strengthen their reading and writing skills through daily word work. As part of this time, they are working with "heart words" and high-frequency words in our flexible learning groups. Heart Words are common words that students need to know “by heart” because parts of the word may not follow typical spelling patterns. High-frequency words are words that students see often in reading and use frequently in writing, so it’s important that they can recognize them quickly and spell them correctly. Learning these words helps students read more smoothly and write with greater confidence.
During word work each week, students add new high-frequency words to their current spelling pattern word sort. They practice these words through multiple activities like playing word games, sentence building, and working together with classmates. By using flexible groupings, we’re able to provide targeted support so students can focus on the words that best meet their individual learning needs.
Our goal is to help students recognize and use these important words automatically in their reading and writing. Through consistent practice and fun, interactive activities, students are building stronger literacy skills every day.
