Hello Jennie Elliott Families,
Thank you to all the parents who joined us Thursday evening for our Assessment and Reporting Information Session. We sincerely appreciate the strong turnout and the meaningful engagement throughout the evening, especially as many of you braved the cold weather to attend.
During the session, we shared several resources available throught he CBE's website designed to support families in understanding upcoming report cards and preparing for March student-led conferences. Please see the links below for more information.
Assessment and Reporting in the CBE Video – highlights the K-9 Proficiency Scale used within the CBE Report Card
Assessment and Reporting in CBE - an overview of the guiding principles of assessment
How is my child doing in school? - an overview of CBE report cards and indicators
Questions to support your child’s learning - provides a list of questions to guide parents through conversations regarding your child’s learning
Report Cards
Further to earlier communication, a reminder that report cards will be available for families to view digitally via your online MyCBE portal on February 24th. Once you are logged in to the portal, you will see “Report Card / Student Info” on the left side of the screen. Then click the “Report Card” tab across the top. Please see this video for more information about how to access your child’s PowerSchool assignment grades that have informed the report card, as well as their report card.
It is important to note that Report Cards are not archived in your MyCBE account. Please download and save or print your child’s report card for later reference as they will not be visible after one month, until the June report card.
Also of note, the Calgary Board of Education has moved towards a common structure for report card comments which has been applied across all schools. This format will provide clarity, conciseness, and consistency for students and families when communicating and reporting assessment information. As such, you will notice that your child's comments will include:
- Areas of Strength
- Areas for Growth
Each comment will also provide:
- the level of proficiency your child is working at in a specific outcome of the curriculum
- a description of the evidence that the student demonstrated, as an example that informed the report card mark
As messaged earlier, you can also refer to your child’s PowerSchool grades through your MyCBE account for further evidence that is made visible to parents over the course of each term.
If you have any questions about your child's report card, feel free to reach out to your child's teacher.
2026–27 Student Enrolment Survey
Thank you to those families who have taken the time to complete this very important survey. All families with students currently enrolled in Kindergarten through Grade 5 are asked to complete the enrollment form by February 27th. The form will ask whether your child will be returning to Jennie Elliott next year, will not be returning, or if your plans are still undecided.
Please complete one form per student in your family. Thank you for taking the time to support our planning for next year.
Pink Shirt Day
Our school will recognize Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday, February 25. This day began in 2007 when two Canadian students organized a show of support for a classmate who was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. Their simple act of kindness grew into a national movement promoting inclusion and standing up against bullying.
To participate, students and staff are encouraged to wear pink, and students will be participating in school-wide activities in support of our continued work to develop our school's safe, caring, welcoming and respectful learning environment.
Netball Residency
Unfortunately, the Netball Residency scheduled for March 2-6 and 9-13 has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances on the organizers' end. We are working with them to see if it will be possible to reschedule the residency for later in the year, or to schedule a different residency in its place.
School Development Plan (SDP) Highlights
At our February School Council Meeting, we reviewed our School Development Plan (SDP), examining the data that informed this year’s goal and the measures we are using to monitor growth. As part of year two of our three-year plan, our continued school-wide focus is centered on building reading fluency. Fluency strengthens word recognition and overall comprehension, serving as a critical “bridging process” between decoding and understanding. When word recognition becomes automatic, it supports working memory and allows students to focus more fully on meaning. Strong fluency skills also positively impact writing, as increased efficiency with word recognition and spelling leads to clearer, more effective written expression.
School Planning Parent Engagement
At the March School Council meeting on March 3rd at 6:30pm, we will share part II of community engagement presentation where we will share how the school budget provides funding to implement our school development plan as well as school fees and why they are necessary. Watch this short video to learn about the planning work schools do to improve and support student learning. There will be an opportunity to provide feedback after the session.
Parent Information Session #4 | Screenagers Movie: The Next Chapter Tues, Mar 10
On March 10th from 5:00-6:00pm we will be screening the movie, Screenagers: The Next Chapter. This film focuses on kids’ and teens’ mental health in the digital age – addressing stress, anxiety, and emotional well-being. It offers practical tools and hopeful stories to help families support children as they grow. You do not need to view the first film we screened earlier in the year, Elementary School Edition, prior to watching The Next Chapter. The content in one is not dependent on the other.
Please RSVP here and feel free to share the link with other JES families.
