Hello Jennie Elliott Families,
Join Us for a Parent Info Session: Curriculum 101
As shared last week, we are excited to invite families to "Curriculum 101" on January 27 from 5:00–6:00 PM in the Learning Commons. This informative session is perfect for parents who are curious about what their children are learning and how the Alberta K–6 curriculum shapes classroom instruction and assessment. With several new curricula recently introduced, Curriculum 101 will offer clear, helpful insight into what learning looks like across grade levels and what students are expected to know and do. We hope you’ll join us for an engaging and informative evening of learning together!

Family Literacy Day – January 27th
Literacy is everywhere, and it is more than just reading books and writing sentences. We read the pictures on signs, write grocery lists, read subtitles on movies, listen to audio books, or read recipes. So, what are your ingredients for literacy? What do you do with your family to engage in literacy throughout your day? National Family Literacy Day is January 27th and this year's theme is "Make mealtime family learning time," encouraging families to learn together during meal prep and eating through activities like cooking, making lists, and sharing stories to build literacy skills. We encourage everyone to send pictures to your child's teacher of your family engaging in literacy with your own "ingredients". We will be putting these photos together to celebrate on our Family Literacy Day bulletin board!
Provincial Assessments – Grades K through 3
As in past years, the provincial government requires standardized assessments for students in Kindergarten through Grade 3. Next week, students in Grades 1–3 will complete the second of three required assessments, while Kindergarten students will take part in this assessment process for the first time. These assessments offer insight into students’ early literacy and numeracy development. At the school level, results support teachers in identifying individual learning needs and determining appropriate instructional next steps. Families seeking more information are encouraged to review the CBE parent information sheet.
Traffic Enforcement
Members of Calgary Police Service and Bylaw Enforcement Services visited Jennie Elliott School this week to observe arrival routines, including activity in the designated bus zone. Their observations focused on traffic and pedestrian safety concerns such as safe crossings, vehicles stopping in the middle of the roadway, use of the bus zone, and instances of jaywalking during peak times. Families, please take note of designated crosswalks, respecting the bus zone, following posted signage, and avoiding stopping or parking in travel lanes to help keep all students, staff, and community members safe.
Jennie Elliott Celebration of Dance - Save the Date!
Students will be participating in a dance residency run through Dance PL3Y, beginning on February 2. Please stay tuned for more details regarding Jennie Elliott’s Celebration of Dance performances happening on Wednesday February 11, including specific timing and audience information.
Parental Notification and Opt-in Consent for Human Sexuality – Gr 3, 4, 5, 6
In December, Jennie Elliott School emailed a letter outlining the dates when teachers will begin teaching the Human Sexuality portion of the Physical Education and Wellness curriculum. As required in Alberta, schools must obtain written parent/guardian consent before providing instruction or materials that deal primarily and explicitly with human sexuality, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Without this explicit consent, students are unable to participate in this portion of the curriculum.
If you have not already, we kindly ask that you complete and return the form to your child's classroom teacher as soon as possible to ensure we have the appropriate permissions in place for instruction to proceed.
