Hello Jennie Elliott families,
Today, in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day and Indigenous History Month, our school community came together to reflect on this year’s ongoing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. Throughout the year, we have deepened our understanding of Indigenous circle processes, integrating talking circles into our classrooms as a meaningful way to foster reciprocity, connection, and shared learning. We’ve explored Indigenous cultural practices in relevant and respectful ways, guided by the principles of Indigenous ways of knowing, being, doing, and belonging.
Our grade teams highlighted this important work through a school-wide online presentation, sharing how each class engaged with Truth and Reconciliation in thoughtful and intentional ways. Following the presentation, we gathered on the field to conclude our year as we began it on Orange Shirt Day — in circle — honouring community, voice, and shared reflection.
Although the rain eventually moved us indoors, it did not dampen the spirit of the day! We were privileged to witness a powerful dance performance by Knowledge Keeper Jackie Soppit, alongside our Grade 6 students who demonstrated their learning through hoop dancing and the Snake Dance. We also celebrated the voices of several students: two Métis students who shared their dances, a student who proudly drummed on a recently gifted hand drum, and another who shared the story of receiving his Blackfoot name at birth.
We are incredibly proud of our students — for their courage, their pride, and their willingness to share their Indigenous identities and experiences with our school community.
2025-26 Jennie Elliott Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation
Today we also renewed our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation for the 2025-26 school year:
At Jennie Elliott School, we are committed to deepening our understanding and continuing our journey toward reconciliation alongside our students, staff, and families. Through these efforts, we aim to play a meaningful role in advancing reconciliation and fostering a more inclusive society. We are eager to engage our whole school community in this ongoing process of learning, mutual respect, and collective growth.
