Hello Jennie Elliott families!

As we celebrate World Teachers’ Day on October 5th, we’d like to take a moment to recognize our dedicated team of teachers at Jennie Elliott School. Whether they are planning creative learning experiences, organizing outdoor learning trips, supervising clubs, helping students navigate a friendship challenge, encouraging a reluctant learner, celebrating a student's strengths, or simply being the trusted adult who makes a child feel seen and valued, our teachers make a difference in countless ways beyond teaching students in desks - many of which happen quietly and behind the scenes.

Thank you to our amazing Jennie Elliott teachers for making such a meaningful difference in the lives of our students!

National Custodian Appreciation Day!

Last Friday we also celebrated our incredible Facilities team, led by the one-and-only Ms. Heregene, for National Custodian Appreciation Day. Our whole school came together to celebrate and thank our amazing custodians! Students had the opportunity to create a Chain of Thanks, sharing kind words, messages, and drawings to show how much we appreciate everything our custodians do each day. We were excited to fill our school with kindness and gratitude and let our custodians know just how much they are appreciated!

Jennie Elliott’s Call to Action

Each year, all schools in the CBE renew their committment to Truth and Reconciliation. On September 29th, Jennie Elliott was honoured to announce our renewed call to action for the 2026-27 school year.

Walking Field Trips

Please read our annual Jennie Elliott Walking Field Trips information letter for families. Our classes often take advantage of our close proximity to Glenmore Park and the learning that our neighbourhood has to offer for outdoor, place-based and natural learning opportunities. Please watch for more information to come from each teacher about when and where their trips will take place, in their weekly messages.

Follow us on Social Media

A few weeks ago we launched our new Instagram account that will be used as another means to share what is happening in and around the school. Be sure to follow us at jennieelliottschoolcbe !

Terry Fox Run

Our Terry Fox Run will be on Wednesday this coming week. Thank you to the parents who have signed up to volunteer. We invite all of our community members to come join our run!

This year, we are aiming to beat our fundraising efforts of last year. So far, we have reached 42% or our $3800 goal! Thank you for helping support one of the most important Canadian and world-wide fundraising efforts in support of cancer research – The Terry Fox Marathon of Hope.

Highlights from the Music Program & Ms. Ling

“Where words leave off, music begins.”

~ Heinrich Heine

German poet and writer

We are so excited to continue building on everything our wonderful DHH students learned last year! This year, Ms. Ling will be introducing some creative new approaches to our music classes. For our younger students, we are taking an interdisciplinary approach as we "sign and sing" together. For our older students, our lessons are inspired by Evelyn Glennie, a world-renowned percussionist who is profoundly deaf. Her incredible story and her method of teaching students to "listen" to music through bodily vibrations form the heart of our upper-level curriculum.

Here is a look at what each group will be exploring:

  • DHH 1, 2, and 3: Our younger students learned seasonal songs that beautifully connect singing and signing, which helps them naturally grow their sign language vocabulary. We also explored the playful side of music through body percussion (like clapping, snapping, and stomping), learning the difference between sound and silence, and exploring high versus low pitches.
  • DHH 4: Our older students have been focusing on advancing their drumming skills! They continue to work on drumming with rhythmic precision, learn to read musical patterns and compose their own rhythms using fundamental rhythmic values.

We can't wait to see all the musical growth and creativity this year will bring!

What is the Jennie Elliott School Council?

Our School Council is an important part of the Jennie Elliott community, and we encourage all families to consider attending our School Council meetings throughout the year.

School Council provides a wonderful opportunity for parents and caregivers to share ideas, ask questions, learn more about what is happening at our school, and contribute to the experiences we create for our students. When families and the school work together, we are better able to understand the needs of our students and build a strong, connected school community.

You do not need to be a member of the Executive or have a specific role to attend. All families are welcome! Even attending one meeting is a great way to learn more about the work happening behind the scenes at Jennie Elliott and to have your voice heard.

Our School Council also supports many of the special opportunities that make Jennie Elliott such a wonderful place to learn - from supporting school initiatives and student experiences to helping strengthen connections between our school and our families.

We value the perspectives, ideas and experiences that our families bring to our community. Your involvement matters, and your voice can make a difference. We hope to see many of you at an upcoming School Council meeting!

Thank you for being an important part of the Jennie Elliott School community and for partnering with us to make a positive difference for our students.
