Hello Jennie Elliott families!
We are grateful for the dedicated volunteers who drive the initiatives of the Jennie Elliott School Council (JESC) and Jennie Elliott Parent Society (JEPSA). Their work, especially through fundraising, directly supports many important learning experiences that make Jennie Elliott an outstanding school. All students benefit from these efforts, and we invite you to hear more about their impact at the next School Council meeting on September 23 at 6:30pm in the school's library, where we will celebrate and share this year’s initiatives. You can also Click here to access the School Council meetings online.
JEPSA has been granted Casino dates on October 6 and 7, and they need volunteers to make this important fundraiser a success. To provide more context - Parent Societies can apply for a casino fundraiser through the AGLC that governs the gaming licensing for the Alberta government. If the application is approved, the society is assigned Casino dates where volunteers help run a local casino, and in return, the school receives a significant portion of the proceeds. This can bring in tens of thousands of dollars in just a couple of days, directly supporting student programs, learning resources, residencies, field trips, and other school enhancements, making it one of the most impactful fundraisers available.
There are still 28 shifts to fill for the Casino dates for the Jennie Elliott Parent Association fundraiser. Please click here to sign up and support an event that directly enhances the learning experiences of every student at Jennie Elliott.
Calgary Flames Flag Football Residency – Sept 15-19
Next week, our students will take part in a Flag Football residency led by the Calgary Flames Classroom Crew. During regularly scheduled Phys-Ed classes, trained instructors will guide students through fun and engaging lessons on teamwork, leadership, and the fundamentals of flag football. All sessions will take place outdoors. Please ensure your child(ren) are wearing appropriate clothing for the weather each day. The Calgary Flames Classroom Crew provides all equipment and a safe, inclusive, and exciting experience for every student. Their goal is to foster a love of sport, physical activity, and healthy living—all while making learning fun!
Welcome Back & Meet the Teacher Event
Our Welcome Back & Meet the Teacher event is this Thursday. A reminder that this year, we are dividing the time families come based on the student’s last name to alleviate crowding in the classrooms. Please also see your classroom teachers’ weekly messages sent Fridays, for further information.
Initial of Child’s Last Name | Time to Attend in the Classroom |
A-H | 3:45-4:30pm |
I-P | 4:30-5:15pm |
Q-Z | 5:15-6:00pm |
As usual, the food trucks will be on the field with food service from 3:45 – 6:45 pm, for those who would like to picnic on the field together!
Safe Parking
As messaged previously, the Lakeview Community Association and Jennie Elliott School have partnered to create safer movement of traffic on 30th Street and Lindsay Drive. This is often a place of congestion and safety concerns for our students, our buses, drivers and our adjacent residents.
As part of our endeavour to create safer parking and traffic zones, the LCA has highlighted a new and colourful parking and drop-off zone on 66th Avenue. This took tremendous efforts of many dedicated volunteers with the goal of encouraging families to use this “hug and go” zone in the mornings at drop-off and after schools during pick-up.
Parking, no parking and no stopping zones are clearly marked around the building, and must be adhered to like all traffic laws in the city. Exceptions are not made for student drop-off or pick-up at schools.
Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school community safe!
Field Trips Within Walking Distance Notice
Please read our annual Jennie Elliott Walking Field Trips information letter for families. Some of our classes will be taking advantage of our close proximity to Glenmore Park and the Weaselhead for land-based learning activities as early as next week! Please watch for more information to come from each teacher about when and where their trips will take place, in their weekly messages.
K-3 Assessments
Universal screeners are assessments that measure a learner’s proficiency in different skills. In the Calgary Board of Education, teachers will be administering mandatory literacy and numeracy screening assessments in Kindergarten to Grade 3 over the next few weeks. Please read more about this from our CBE brochure, Understanding Universal Screeners, and speak to your child's teacher if you would like further information.
Terry Fox School Run – Thursday, September 25th
Days of Significance
Throughout the year, the CBE identifies some of the significant days and events that our communities recognize. While it is impossible to include all significant days, it is an opportunity for our Jennie Elliott school community to learn about the many ways our different social and cultural groups recognize important days or events and continue to build a culture of appreciation and inclusion, where students and staff can see themselves valued, respected and celebrated. We will be explaining some of these days in our daily announcements for our students, and some we will be recognizing in more school-wide or classroom-based learning, as in years past. We will endeavour to share these days through our Upcoming Dates below as well.
Parent Information Session
Jennie Elliott School is hosting a special screening of Screenagers: Elementary School-Aged Edition on Thursday, Oct 2 at 6:30 PM in the school library.
