Hello Jennie Elliott families!

Our week was full with many exciting events including our first Parent Information Session (Raising Readers), the first of our K-6 Scientists in Schools residencies (grades 3 and 4), the first School Council meeting of the year (watch for minutes being posted on our website soon), our first evacuation drill of the year, the Terry Fox Run, and Orange Shirt Day!  Thank you to all our parents and volunteers who participate and support these important initiatives, and to our staff who have spent countless hours at an already busy time of year to organize these events. This is what makes Jennie Elliott a thriving school community!

Volunteers Needed!

Speaking of volunteers, JEPSA is significantly short of volunteers for the Casino on October 6th and 7th. If they cannot fill the volunteer positions, we will be in jeopardy of losing significant funding that has supported our school - up to $80,000 in years past.

Casino funds provide a major contribution to the exceptional programming at Jennie Elliott including sport residencies (lacrosse, dance, netball, etc.), updating the learning commons resources and books, tools and resources to support the new language arts and mathematics curriculum, and bigger projects like the outdoor learning space that is scheduled for construction beginning April 2026. More importantly, these funds also allow us to direct as much of our school funding towards staffing as possible, which means we can keep our class sizes lower.

While you may not have volunteered for a Casino before, every role is very simple to do and you are supported by Casino employees to help you through it. It is also fun to do with your friends if you want to get a group together to volunteer the same shifts!

Thank you for considering your time towards this very worthwhile fundraiser that will directly benefit your child.

Updates from the Music Program

“Where words leave off, music begins.”

~ Heinrich Heine

German poet and writer

I am most excited and honoured to be able to work with our DHH (Deaf and Hard of Hearing) students this year!  We embarked on a journey together three weeks without knowing exactly where we would go and how to get there.  Each time we met, we explored new ways to “listen” to music.  One of these ways is through drumming as we turn our bodies into “resonating chambers.”  By feeling the vibration of the drum, we have explored sound versus silence, loud versus soft, fast versus slow through drumming games.  My approach is inspired by the world-renowned percussionist, Evelyn Glennie, who began losing her hearing at a young age.  Profoundly deaf, Evelyn Glennie continues to share with others her personal journey as a percussionist and explore new strategies to help DHH people “listen” to music through their body.

Division II Choir:  For students (in Grades 4-6) who have expressed an interest in joining the choir, they have already received a form, which needs to be signed and returned by October 1.  There is a “Check-it-out session” on October 7 for those who are unsure if they want to join the choir.  Looking forward to seeing your child!

Active & Safe Routes to School Program

The Active and Safe Routes to School student workshops for our 30 Student Change-Makers and ambassadors will be starting on Friday October 3! We’re excited to kick off this program and work together to improve traffic safety at Jennie Elliott.

Please remember to fill out the Family Travel Survey to help us better understand how students are getting to school.
