Weekly Update | September 8

Our students are already settling in so beautifully with their teachers, classmates and classroom routines! During visits with students in classrooms, hallways and recesses, they are all eager to share what they’re learning and new routines they have in the classes.

Air Quality Index

You might have heard that we had indoor recess and lunch earlier this week due to a high level of smoke in the air. When Environment Canada’s air quality health index (AQHI) reaches a level of 7 or higher, we are asked to consider postponing or cancelling outside activities during lunch and recess and monitor the situation within our area of the city. Thankfully, we were able to resume outside activities for the remainder of the week.

Walking Field Trips

Please read our annual Jennie Elliott Walking Field Trips  information letter for families. Some of our classes will already be taking advantage of our close proximity to Glenmore Park and the Weaselhead for land-based learning activities next week. More information to come from each teacher about when and where their trips will take place.

Hello From Mr. Dunlop!

Our Physical Education and Wellness teacher, Mr. Dunlop, would like to say hello to all of our Jennie Elliott families. I am happy to share his greeting letter with everyone.

Lunchtime Activities | Jennie’s Junior Jaguars - Triple J’s

We are excited to announce that Mr. Dunlop will be leading lunchtime activities focused on physical activity and wellness called Triple J Time, which stands for “Jennie’s Junior Jaguars”! Mr. Dunlop has organized this time to allow our students to discover that there are a multitude of ways we can keep our bodies and minds active both inside and outside. Students will not only have opportunities to be active through fun games in the gym, but participation will also give students an opportunity to develop a greater sense of stewardship for our school, make connections with the land on which we live and learn, and to advocate to help shape the culture of our school. Along with developing active life skills we will create a stronger sense of community and belonging, shaping our school into a place we are all proud to be a part of.

Triple J Time will occur every other Tuesday or Thursday for each grade, during lunch recess and is optional for students to participate. Many of the activities we hope to develop through student agency and voice to help guide the direction and activities.

We look forward to seeing this initiative take shape over the year!

Student Attendance

We'd like to remind parents that the CBE does not support the PowerSchool app. The app provides live-time push notifications for things like attendance, which does not allow for adjustments that are made after the teachers have submitted attendance. Classroom teachers only have access to the following attendance codes: Present or Absent (A). Only office staff have the ability to correct attendance to different, excused reasons, such as Illness, medical appointment, religious holidays, or a parental excused absence etc.

It takes time for the front office to receive the phone messages, emails and late students/buses every morning. Attendance is updated as necessary during the morning and then an automated email message is sent informing you of your child's unexcused absence, after the front office has cross-referenced all the classroom attendances to our voicemails, emails and late sign-ins.

Thank you for your understanding as we work to ensure our attendance is updated each morning and afternoon, and are students are safely accounted for.

REMINDER | Meet the Teacher

Our Meet the Teacher event will be Thursday, September 14th from 4:00-6:00pm.  Similar to last year, we will have two 30-minute opportunities for families to visit with their child’s teacher in the classroom and hear a little more from the teacher about classroom routines, upcoming events, curriculum plans, etc. There is no need to sign up. Families can attend the time that works best for them.  Families are also welcome to tour the school and there will be food trucks available should you wish to take advantage during the dinner hour!
